JDevlin May I suggest that reading is more specific than decoding symbols to derive their meaning. For instance, seeing '152' and knowing what it means isn't reading, in the traditional sense. Nor would viewing a swastika and recognizing it as a Nazi (or even older) symbol count as reading. As a definition, I would suggest that reading is the process of linking written words with their sound and meaning. Or more formally, reading is the process that links orthographic symbols with phonological, semantic, morphological and grammatical information.
