TASK
lexical decision task
a procedure used in many psychology and psycholinguistics experiments; the basic procedure involves measuring how quickly people classify stimuli as words or nonwords. Subjects are presented, either visually or auditorily, with a mixture of words and pseudowords (nonsense strings that respect the phonotactic rules of a language, like trud in English). Their task is to indicate, usually with a button-press, whether the presented stimulus is a word or not.

Synonyms: word/nonword task

JDevlin It may be worth noting both in the definition and in the conditions and contrasts, that lexical decision is often the basic task being used to explore different aspects of words. For instance, lexical decision experiments are used to test for frequency, familiarity, and imageability effects to name a few. In these cases, the comparisons of interest are all within word conditions. There are so many versions of lexical decision experiments that it might be worth creating more specific LD tasks as separate concepts within this database and linking them to this concept using 'is a type of' relation.
