JDevlin Can I suggest modifying the definition to "The process of maintaining information about the auditory form of verbal information for a limited amount of time"? Even that's not quite right because one can speak of phonological working memory with sign languages. I think it is important, though, to note this is specific to *verbal information* (not to sounds) because lots of sounds are not phonological and verbal information need not be auditory.
